Our History

  • September 29th, 1915 William F. O‘Neil, “W.O.” and Winfred E. Fouse, found the General Tire and Rubber Company in Akron, Ohio.
  • 1928 General Tire develops rubber flaps for truck tires.
  • 1930‘s The first international subsidiary is founded in Mexico.
  • 1930‘s Nygen and fabric production.
  • 1944 GT began production in its 2nd U.S. facility in Waco, Texas; production phased out in 1986.
  • 1960 A new material combination for compound is patented.
  • 1973 General Tire opens its 6th plant, equipped for full radial tire production, in Mt. Vernon, Illinois.
  • October 30th, 1987 Continental Tire North America, Inc. finalizes the acquisition of General Tire, Inc.
  • 2007 Introduction of a new logo to represent the brand for both the passenger / light truck and the commercial vehicle tire divisions.
  • 2008 General Tire re-enters Off-Road racing.
  • 2012 General Tire is a leader in the development, production and marketing of quality tires for automotive.
  • September 29th, 2015 General Tire 100 years.
